Rolex, a name synonymous with luxury, is a historic watchmaker that is associated with precision, excellence and innovation. And none of this would have been possible without the founder of Rolex, the man behind the brand, Hans Wilsdorf.
In 1905, Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis founded Wilsdorf and Davis in London, which would eventually become Rolex SA. This company, called Wilsdorf & Davis, specialized in distributing watches not only in the UK but also throughout the British Empire. Wilsdorf & Davis supplied watch parts from various Swiss partners, including precise movements from Aegler in Biel / Bienne, Switzerland. Three years later, on July 2, 1908, Wilsdorf & Davis registered the name “Rolex” in Switzerland, and the trademark “Rolex” was then registered internationally in 1913. In 1914, the Kew Observatory awarded the Rolex watch the Class A precision certificate, a distinction that is normally given exclusively to marine chronometers.
On July 2, 1958, Hans Wilsdorf revealed the origins of his famous name brand during a 50th anniversary speech: “A ghost whispered ‘Rolex’ in my ear. ‘ Whether or not this charming story is true, the name Rolex and the accompanying crown insignia have truly forged a magical path to become one of the most iconic logos in modern history. Some speculate that the name Rolex was inspired by the French phrase “Horlogerie Exquise”, which roughly translates to “refined watchmaking” in English. Others assume that the name was chosen because it is reminiscent of the sound that a watch makes when it is powered on.
